Surface
EMG
Surface EMG (Electromyography) is a device for measuring
extremely small amounts of electricity generated by muscles
below the surface of the skin. It is a
reliable
way to accurately measure and record muscle tension due to
stress or trauma. Recording before and after treatment can
be used to show progress and treatment effectiveness.
Two
collectors called "electrodes" are placed on the skin above the muscles
being tested. A computer interprets the underlying electrical differences,
which may be as small as one ten millionth of a volt. These differences may
indicate excessive muscle tension.
What does Surface EMG feel like?
Most
patients feel some light pressure from the electrodes, however Surface EMG
is basically a safe and painless diagnostic procedure.
Patient Benefits:
-
Safe and non-intrusive diagnostic procedure
-
Shows location of muscle spasm
-
Visual display is easy to understand
-
Documents severity of condition
-
Records effectiveness of treatment
